The main thing to remember with any social networking site is to be friendly, interact with others, and add things of value, but never spam.
People don't appreciate it and it's a good way to have someone remove your from your friends list. If you are interacting with others and getting to know them, people will click on your links without you asking them. This is another good way to get free traffic.
When someone adds you as a friend you may want to send them a personal note. It's nice to say something about them that you only would know from reading their profile.
